Episode 37In this episode we talk about Reiss’s 16 Intrinsic Motivations, and what it is about subtitles that engages us.

Steven Reiss suggests that there are 16 distinctly different intrinsic motivators.  Of those, I think there are 8 that really work for training session.  Scatter as many as you can in there and hopefully participants do a bit more of the heavy lifting for you.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi (trailer seen here) was a great movie that got me thinking of how we can learn form a subtitled documentary to increase learner engagement.  It’s a great movie but the whole thing is in Japanese with english subtitles.  Turns out, this really worked to keep me engaged.

8 Ways to Motivate Learners

I’ve recently been exposed to a paper written by Steven Reiss, called the Multifaceted Nature of Intrinsic Motivation. The more I read, the more I see how interwoven all human-centric ideas are.

I’m a firm believer that everyone has to be a sales person, on some level.  If you can’t sell, you’ll never get what you want.  While there might be some underhanded sales tactics out there, as a sales person I was able to add value to customers lives and I didn’t have to feel bad about it.  Sales skills are a tool, and all tools can be abused.  But this isn’t what I’m talking about.   Continue reading

Four Ways Sushi Increases Learner Engagement



I recently saw the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi .  If you haven’t seen it, the film is about a sushi chef in Japan.  This guy’s been making sushi for 70 years, and he’s got a restaurant that get’s booked months in advance.  It’s a cool story but the whole thing is in japanese.  Now, my japanese is a bit rusty but the good news is the whole movie has subtitles.
